I write about the small details that make systems easier to live with.
Bio
I'm Valerio, a software engineer with nearly twenty years of experience building backend systems, cloud infrastructure, and production software across different industries.
Most of my work has been in Java and Python on the backend, with experience across modern frontend applications, AWS, Kubernetes, and distributed systems. Over the years I've worked with relational databases, document stores, and column-oriented systems depending on the problem that needed solving.
I've worked on product architecture, fintech platforms, compliance systems, and AI services — usually somewhere between early design decisions and the operational realities that appear later in production.
vmcforge is where I keep notes about the technical details that are easy to forget: fixes, patterns, architectural trade-offs, and lessons learned while building and maintaining real systems.
I write because experience only becomes valuable when it's shared and reusable.
Trajectory
- 2024 — now Software Architect · AI & product platforms
Design and development of AI platforms, ML infrastructure, billing systems, and new product architectures.
Working on the transition from AI prototypes to production systems, with a focus on reliability, scalability, observability, and operational simplicity. Involved in both technical architecture and product definition for AI-driven services. Strong emphasis on platform thinking, and operational stability in fast-moving environments.
- 2012 — 2024 Principal Architect · fintech & compliance
Architecture and evolution of large-scale financial and regulatory reporting systems.
Worked on Solvency II, Basel III, and IFRS platforms, where data correctness, traceability, and audit requirements drive architectural decisions. Led the modernization of complex enterprise systems while balancing regulatory constraints, performance, and long-term maintainability. Led architectural decisions for long-lived systems, balancing regulatory constraints, scalability, and continuous change in complex enterprise ecosystems.
- 2008 — 2012 Senior Engineer · enterprise software
Development of large-scale Java enterprise systems, integration platforms, and distributed applications.
Designed services and integration solutions across heterogeneous enterprise environments, gaining extensive experience in system integration, deployment automation, performance, and production operations. Built strong foundations in system reliability, deployment strategies, and operational complexity of production systems.
- 2006 — 2008 Backend Engineer · early career
Backend development focused on APIs, relational databases, and production support.
Built and maintained business-critical applications, working closely with operations and end users. This period provided hands-on experience with production environments and established the engineering foundations that shaped later architectural work.
