I write about the engineering decisions that make systems easier to operate, debug, and change over time.
Bio
I'm Valerio, a software engineer with nearly twenty years of experience building backend systems, cloud infrastructure, and production software across different industries.
Most of my work has been in Java and Python on the backend, with experience across AWS, Kubernetes, and distributed systems. I've worked with relational databases, document stores, and column-oriented systems across different problem domains.
I've worked on product architecture, fintech platforms, compliance systems, and AI services — from early design through production operations.
vmcforge is where I keep notes about the technical details that are easy to forget: fixes, patterns, architectural trade-offs, and lessons learned while building and maintaining real systems.
Trajectory
- 2024 — now Software Architect · AI & product platforms
Design and development of AI platforms, ML infrastructure, billing systems, and new product architectures.
Work spans technical architecture and product definition, with a focus on moving AI prototypes into production systems: reliability, observability, and operational stability under active development.
- 2012 — 2024 Principal Architect · fintech & compliance
Architecture and evolution of large-scale financial and regulatory reporting systems.
Solvency II, Basel III, and IFRS platforms, where data correctness, traceability, and audit requirements drove architectural decisions. Led the modernization of complex enterprise systems under continuous regulatory change.
- 2008 — 2012 Senior Engineer · enterprise software
Development of large-scale Java enterprise systems, integration platforms, and distributed applications.
Service and integration development across heterogeneous enterprise environments: system integration, deployment automation, performance tuning, and production operations.
- 2006 — 2008 Backend Engineer · early career
Backend development focused on APIs, relational databases, and production support.
Development and maintenance of business-critical applications, working with operations and end users on production systems.
